Baziala
Baziala continent is significantly more hostile than the Northern continent Spiderland. Because of the extremes of the environments, there has been little opportunity in the Baziala to create urban hubs. While The Spiderlands, the continent to the North, has three urban areas, Sayaie, the trading hub, Itnala, the fishing village, and Chydyn, the forested agricultural area, Baziala has almost no metropolitan areas. The closest are Baziala has to a city is the small port town of Estya. While Estya is a trading center, it is a tiny one, significantly smaller than even the smallest of the cities in the Spiderlands.
The reason for the lack of urban areas in Baziala, as well as the limited technology, comes from the difficulty of living in the environments present on the continent. Not only do the citizens of Baziala have to deal with the constant threat of xymokoxi, creatures who destroy and kill any people or industries in their path, but they also must deal with living in places that are difficult to manage. The Northern half of the island is densely forested, and the forest grows into deep jungle around the middle of the continent and on the North-Western peninsula. In all the forested areas, the flora and fauna are tropical. The deep jungle areas are extremely dangerous, filled with all kind of hostile and large creatures as well as carnivorous plants with basins deep enough to consume a human. The population of Kamrovs is highest in the deep jungle, as the Kamrovs hunt many of the dangerous rainforest animals. It is not impossible or even uncommon to find Kamrov nests in the jungle. The towns and villages in the jungle areas tend to be on the smaller side, while the forest towns are much larger.
In many places on the northern half of the continent, the forest reaches the coastline, and so there is very little beach area. When there are not areas of coastal forest, there are rocky cliffs that line the water. The Eyrie is perched on an area of such coastal cliffs. The cliffs are rocky, and they sit on top of areas of high igneous activity. The area under the Eyrie has the highest level of volcanic activity on the continent which heats the sands and baths. The cliffs are quite beautiful, and the seawater is almost always warm.
The southern half of the continent is perhaps even more hostile towards human life. The whole southeastern quarter of the continent is covered in desert created by the mountains in the southwestern quarter. The desert is difficult to inhabit, as there is almost no water and no protection from koxi attacks, so the towns in that area are small. People do live throughout the region, however, and they have learned ways to adapt to the harsh conditions. The southwestern side of Baziala is mostly rocky beaches and small mountains. The climate is more moderate than the rest of the island because of the coastal plains. The vegetation on the southwestern side of the island is different than the rest of the island as well, as the sandy soil does not provide enough nutrients for the dense vegetation of the forests.
Because the Eyrie is the most advanced area of Baziala, oftentimes children who do not have anywhere else to go are sent to live with the simourvs. Families who cannot support extra children are known to send children away to become candidates. Of course, not all children sent to the Eyrie are appropriate for a simourv, and many candidates never impress. After a candidate stands for five hatchings without impressing, he or she either becomes a kamrov candidate and then a kamrov rider, often referred to as a racer, or joins the staff of the Eyrie as a kitchen aid, merchant, healer, craftsman, or grounds worker. Some simourvs can tell which people will be likely to impress, and those simourvs are called searchers, their riders referred to as searchriders. While not all candidates are searched, sometimes a searchrider will approach an individual about his or her capacity to become a simourv rider. Not all candidates who impress are searched, yet candidates who are searched almost always impress. Children are eligible to be sent to the Eyrie to become candidates when they turn twelve, and people remain eligible to impress as old as twenty-six. Most candidates range between fourteen and twenty-four.
The Eyrie is controlled by the senior grayrider, called the Senior Phoenix. The current Senior Phoenix is C’elia of Gray Semph, and both queens rule the Eyrie with a tyrannical hand. Rider and simourv wish to control all of Baziala, if not all of Pohono, and they do so by continuously empowering the Eyrie by making the people outside of the Eyrie completely dependent. Within the Eyrie, C’elia is known to be cruel, constantly demanding respect and control, and not respecting the lives and needs of her riders. The Eyrie’s second in command is the Senior Commander, the rider of the blackrider who last won the senior gray in flight. While the Senior Commander has previously been aligned with C’elia and supportive of her, the young blackrider who won Semph in her last flight has not yet shown himself in support of the Phoenix or against her. Candidates and Winglets, newly bonded simourv riders, have chores which they perform around the Eyrie. Rider’s spend most of their time patrolling for and fighting against koxi all over Baziala. Kamrov riders who choose to stay at the Eyrie instead of living to guard various villages, run ground patrols of the area around the Eyrie and the area around the coast. Kamrov riders also compete in competitions at the Eyrie’s competition ring and carry mail and supplies throughout Baziala.
