Fa’le rose with the break of the sun, excitement bubbling up in her stomach. Thi would be her first lesson! It would be just like when she was a winglet, only she would be the one teaching! She got ready quickly and was soon nudging Gealtachtaph into wakefulness. C’monnn, Geal! Usually it’s you who’s pokin’ at me trying to get me to go everywhere! Why’re you being so lazy? she teased, grabbing onto the shorter of the horn pairs and jostling his head around. Miiine, don't you UNDERSTAND that perfection takes time? Well, unless you are made of perfection. Which I am! I like being made of perfection. But Fa'le, my Mine, it's so EARLY! There really is no point in getting up so early. Well, unless you're excited. Which you obviously are! But so earlyyyyy... came the tired and mildly whining reply. Still, the rainbow shuffled upright (pulling His up onto his beak along the way) and let loose a loud yawn. Fa’le gasped a bit as she was hoisted into the air, laughing a bit as her feet kicked helplessly in the air. Geal, let me down! I need to get you ready! she squealed, which was replied to with a happy trill.
It wasn’t long until the new Cygnus Wingletmasters were in front of the Winglet Barracks. Fa’le looked upon the building fondly, remembering her better days residing there. Gealtachtaph warbled approvingly at the renovated roof. Geal, could you get them? The morning’s getting late, and I don’t want to keep the butchers waiting with a bunch of sharp knives, lots of raw meat, and nothing to do, she asked. Geal trilled brightly before carrying out the request. Cygnus Winglets! This is your Cygnus Winglet Master, Rainbow Gealtachtaph! Me and my dear Fa'le will be your instructors for the next year- Geal, get to the point. You’re going off on a tangent again. Oh, right. Anyways. Now that introductions are out of the way, we would like that you get ready for your first lesson! Please dress in clothes you don't mind getting dirty! Fa'le will explain everything along the way.
Fa’le smiled approvingly as the message was sent to the Winglets, but it disappeared when she realized one minor detail. Geal? Yes, my dearest of Fa'le's? he replied dapperly. Send one of the winglets to get Raiph and Turph. If I remember correctly, Er’nei and Umbriph are closest. Could you tell her to get them for me? Okay, Fa'le! he replied.
Er'nei? he asked the winglet, making sure to keep his message between the two of them. I hope not to be a bother, but Mine wants you to get Raiph and Turph for us. You know, the two Greens that bonded to one another? I would get them, but, well, I don't fit in the barracks anymore! How silly is that? Bu tyes, do get Turph and Raiph for us? It would be appreciated! With that, he withdrew from the girl’s mind and trilled.
Once the entire group was assembled, the blonde waved a hand to get their attention. ”Hello, Cygnus Winglets, and welcome to your first days into becoming a rider,” she announced. ”As Geal here said, I’m Fa’le, and I will be your instructor for the next year or so. And in case you couldn’t hear it, your simourv are hungry!” she chuckled a bit when she heard a loud grumble come from one of the simourv chicks. ”They will be like this for a while, and you will have to feed them multiple times a day. Follow me; we’re heading towards the Corral.” she motioned for them to follow her and her Rainbow as they started walking at a slow pace.
”Usually, we will have butchers cutting up the meat for you, or at the very least skinning it,” she continued, turning to walk backwards as she talked. ”However, we like to have you know what the butchers do in case they are off-duty or are busy getting more stock. In the first few days, they can’t swallow anything larger than the size of your fist. As they age, they will progressively be able to swallow larger and larger chunks until they can hunt for themselves.” She scans the group for any blank stares. ”You will each be in stations of two simourv, one butcher, and one very large cow. The butchers will instruct you on how to skin and dice the meat for the best possible result. Don’t feed it to your simourv until the butcher at your station gives you the okay.”
By now they had reached the corral, and in a line was seven butchers, seven cows, and seven large buckets filled with a strange off-white paste. Fa’le stuck her hand into one of the buckets and pulled it out, covered in the substance. ”This is Bay Nut paste,” she said matter-of-factly. ”Many of you may know it for its milk, which is used to waterproof many things, particularly simourv feathers. Maybe some of you have even worked with them.” Fa’le shook her hand a bit to get any excess off. ”The flesh of a Bay Nut is packed with vitamins and minerals to help keep them healthy. If you want to make some of your own, just crack one open and mix it with some water! But be sure to drain out as much of the milk as possible into a separate bucket; it tends to thicken the paste considerably, and we can always use more Bay Nut milk.” she gave them a broad grin while grabbing a towel. ”Now then! Get a partner, get a cow, and start feeding your babies!”

Bright and early. What an annoying concept. No one should even think about getting up until around noon, it's only then that interesting stuff starts happening anyway! M'laey rolled over, feeling the Rainbow Simourv yammer on about something in her mind. But she wasn't really paying attention, sleep was clouding her thoughts and she was happy to let it. Oshaph however had different ideas. He had woken up to Geal's voice too, but was quite eager to get out and meet him properly for the first time. He crawled closer to M'laey, nosing her forehead affectionately.
It's morning time mine! His voice trembled with excitement, his behind wriggling furiously as he wagged his tail, watching his rider intently.
M'laey attempted to push the blue away with her hand, but the moment her fingers brushed his feathery head she remembered what had happened. She was a rider! She had bonded with a simourv!! Why was she was she still in bed?! She tried to leap up, but got tangled in the blankets and instead tumbled onto Oshaph, rolling with him to the ground. "Oof! Sorry!" she cried, but the little blue didn't mind. His masked eyes were glowing with joy and she could feel his pent up energy emanating from him. M'laey couldn't help but release her own burst of happiness in a loud laugh. It was all still so fresh, so new. But she didn't have time to bathe in that feeling right now, she had a lesson to get to. Her first lesson! What was it the Rainbow had said? Old clothes? Fair enough. She pulled out some of her older trousers and a worn, but clean, white sleeveless top. She got herself ready to go and raced out to the front of the Barracks with her blue, determined not to be last in line.
When everyone else gathered around their new instructors, M'laey got a chance to see all the winglets together properly for the first time. They were a very colourful bunch! She noted the three other blues and naturally thought Oshaph was the better. She swelled with pride. But Oshaph had looked around the class for another reason, he wanted to know where that blasted red was. He felt an anger boil inside him every time he thought of Galleph. He nor his rider weren't about to be attacked again by that monster.
But Fa'le was speaking now, and both M'laey and Oshaph turned their heads to listen to her. They too heard the grumbling stomach of one of the chicks and M'laey smiled a little at it. Oshaph had to agree though, he was starving! He'd never felt so hungry in his life! Or maybe he had and just couldn't remember. But that wasn't the point, he was hungry now, his stomach growling in protest. He and his rider began walking alongside the rest of the group after Fa'le and Geal. He hoped they were leading them to food! Oh they were, that was good. They reached the corral and stared at the butchers and cows all lined up and waiting. It took a lot of restraint on Oshaph's part not to just rush over to start eating one! But he wouldn't know where to start, so he had to wait. His tail was swaying back and forth with anticipation as M'laey listened to Fa'le talk about the Bay Nut Paste. It looked disgusting, but also attractive in a way that made her want to feel it's texture.
A partner! We need a partner and a cow! Oshaph exclaimed excitedly at the last words.
M'laey grinned, "We also need a butcher", she reminded him as she made her way over to one. "Ask around for a partner would please Oshaph?" The blue chirruped with delight and flared his little wings. Would anyone like to be our cow?? he asked, Oh oh wait! I meant partner! We need a partner please!

//Wake up, Mine. Our Winglet Masters are calling for the Cygnus Winglets. That's us, right? Did you hear him? He's also Rainbow! You said that I'm Rainbow, right? So get up now, Mine. The sun is out, I want to see pretty colors!// "I'll get up. You can stop nagging, Minph," Al'eria groaned as he complained to himself mentally, trying to drown out His for the moment. Despite his soft, quiet tone, Minph's tumbling thoughts were persistent and assertive. The new winglet climbed out of bed, trying to not squash the chick, who was covered in bedsheets, by mistake. Some of Minph's vivid feathers were lying around the room now, Al'eria would have to clean up later. But Minph was right--the moment was over, he should not be late for the lesson. Fa'le...of Gealtachtaph? //Isn't Gealtachtaph a pretty name for a Rainbow? I want to see what he looks like.// "Minph is better. Gealtachtaph is too long. I don't think I'll remember it." After watching his rider's morning routine for a while, the chick tugged at a grey sleeveless tunic and old pants that were lying around somewhere on the pair's side of the room. //Let's go, Mine. Wear these things. Geal said that you shouldn't wear clothes you don't want to get dirty. You don't need grey clothes. Grey clothes are booooriiiing~//
Minph chirped happily as he nudged His out, //Blue Ekhaph, are you and Yours not leaving yet? Aren't you hungry? I am. Um. I think you should come too.// Of course, they would leave first. Everyone seemed to worry about Ekhaph's His for some reason, but that didn't matter. Minph and His could not be last, not on such an exciting day full of so many firsts. He needed to make friends as well, because Minph was certain that the other winglets were also pretty. So many blinding and different colors! They looked as if they were all a part of him, or maybe Minph was a part of them? No, that couldn't be it. Minph was Minph, and there was no other Rainbow here other than Geal, who was definitely not him. And there was also Turph and Raiph, the two Greens that bonded to each either. So they didn't have to bond to a human?
As the winglet-pairs gathered around her, Fa'le began her lesson. Chicks sure eat a lot. Several meals a day? thought Al'eria. He made an effort to remember the route to the corrals as well. It wouldn't do to forget. Minph was already salivating at the line of cows and butchers that had greeted him. Fa'le continued with her lesson about butchers and cows, but the rainbow simourv payed no attention. It seemed that he had decided to leave the listening to Al'eria. While Minph stared at Gealtachtaph, imagining how big and beautiful he would become one day, the lesson moved on to bay nut paste, a white, sticky substance that their instructor claimed had many uses.
Al'eria laughed, "We'll partner up with you if you'd like. I'm Al'eria, and this is Minph. I think we met after the hatching?"
(ooc: Sorry, I didn't have time to do the rainbow text thing.)

A'ria woke to the sound of the rainbow's voice chiming in his head. He hadn't slept very well, despite the comforting presence of Charmaph curled up against his chest. The room they had been given was so large and so empty. A'ria's own spare possessions barely filled one corner of the room, and while a few pieces of furniture had been provided to him they did little enough to make the room feel less empty.
As the boy shifted, waking, the tawny woke as well, lifting her fluffy head and yawning. She nudged at A'ria's arm - it felt strange, and she had been using it as a pillow. A'riaMine, I didn't hurt you, did I? It feels all tingly. The tawny put her little fuzzy ears back, nudgine his arm again.
The blonde boy made a face, turning onto his side and pulling his arm away from the simourv. It felt boneless, numb, but as he began to move it he could feel his fingers tingling as blood began to flow. "It's... fine, Charm."
I did it, didn't I? I hurt you. The little tawny's ears flattened, and she made a soft, distressed noise. A'ria shook his head quickly, pushing himself up with his other arm. "No, it isn't... isn't your fault, Charm. It just happens when I sleep on it. Or... when you sleep on it. It'll be back to normal in a minute." He held his arm to his chest, flexing his fingers to restore feeling to them. Charmaph didn't look particularly mollified by this explanation, however. She leaned in and licked his arm. I'm sorry, A'riaMine.
"Don't... Don't worry, Charm. We need to get ready. I... need to get ready. Where are my...?" A'ria pushed himself out of bed, trying to move around the tawny. He spun about, trying to find the chest containing his clothes. He couldn't remember where he had put it - it wasn't where he remembered it being, but what he remembered was his old room, the cramped quarters he had shared with Alonso.
By the time A'ria finally found the chest and dug out appropriate clothes - a plain shirt and breeches, and an oil-stained leather apron he had kept from his apprenticeship - he had heard many of the other new Winglets moving past the doorway. The blonde and his tawny were among the last to arrive, the boy shuffling his steps and ducking his head to try to avoid notice. He listened, Charmaph a silent presence beside him, pressed against his leg. He could feel a vague sense of confusion coming off of the little tawny - meat and butchers, nut-paste and feathers, cows and partners. Food? she made a soft noise, looking up at A'ria.
"We just... we need to find a partner, and then we'll get you some food, Charm."

A voice blasted into his head, effectively waking the boy up from his sleep. "And I was just beginning to think my first day as a rider may be a good one" the boy grumbled. He blinked awake, looking around in curiosity. Where had Espeph gone off to? Had the simourv abando-oh, there, at the foot of Mo'tu's bed. The simourv still hadn't let Mo'tu touch him, though the boy still planned to pet His eventually. He had been attempting cleverly planned surprise pets, but so far, the simourv had been able to anticipate his every move. Which may have been a result of their shared connection, but was still mystifying. Espeph was only a day old, for goodness sake!
With a blink of his golden eyes, Espeph stood with a yawn. You need to eat, Mine he said at once. Lessons are important, but your health is above all. I shall not let you go hungry, even if there is learning to be had. Mo'tu raised an eyebrow. Who was this Espeph who presumed to think that-no, no. Somehow Mo'tu just couldn't bring himself to think badly at all for his partner. Swinging his legs out of bed, Mo'tu replied firmly "I'm not hungry. Class first, then I'll eat. You, however, need something soon. I'm not entirely sure how often Simourv chicks need to eat"
The voice of the Rainbow came again and the boy sighed melodramatically, pulling on a pair of old- but clean- jeans, as well as fresh shirt. The colors matched perfectly with Espeph's fur, and Mo'tu felt pride at that. Perhaps someone in this overly cruel Eyrie would happen to notice the beauty that radiated off Espeph and himself. Espeph, hearing Mo'tu's thoughts, made a light chittering sound that Mo'tu, after a few moments panic, identified as giggling. You're a strange one, Mo'tuMineMo'tu sniffed. "Not strange so much as honest.".
The two walked, side by side, but not close enough that Mo'tu could dart forward and try to pat a patch of feathers. Espeph, upon seeing his brothers and sisters from the hatching, gave a trill of greeting, but refused to leave Mo'tu's side. Mo'tu stood apart from the others, head bowed, as he quietly listened to his Wingletmaster's words. As if there wasn't already too much cheer in the world he thought, hoping somehow that Espeph would heard the words. Of course, His did, and gave that quiet chittering giggle again.
At the end of the speech, Mo'tu nodded expertly. He hated working with the others, who only showed cruelty to him and His, but for Espeph's sake, well, a few minutes couldn't hurt. Glancing around, the boy spotted another boy with a Tawny standing a few feet away. "Oy, you with the Tawny. Partners?"

Once again early-riser T'ryn's breakfast was interrupted by a mental voice in her head - but this one was rainbow instead of the green she had become accustomed to. And this time she had left her room only long enough to snag a bowl of porridge, drizzled more than liberally with honey and sugar, and a chunk of hot buttered bread before returning to eat while watching her new bondmate sleep. Galleph had chosen the floor beside her bed last night - only because it became quickly clear that the big red hatchling was not going to fit on the narrow bed while His was in it. At the moment he was curled up in a ball of red and gold fluff, beak and head nearly lost under the poofed end of his tail.
The redhead used the heel of the bread to scoop the last chunk of porridge out and crammed it in her mouth before turning to her closet. All of her clothes were working clothes of one type or another, and what she had already thrown on this morning was no exception. With a shrug she turned back to her simourv, who had only buried his head deeper into his tailfeathers at Geal's cheery introduction. T'ryn knelt down, running her hands through the downy head feathers and giving a good, hard skritch behind his ears. A muted trill of contentment emerged from the feathery bundle, and the woman grinned, sliding her strong fingers down, behind his jawline, and then under his chin. The red's head rose from its hiding place, a look of pure bliss on the round little features that was downright comical as he leaned into the continued scratchings. T'ryn stopped her work for a moment, contemplating her partner with a grin. "Alright, lazybones! Up and attem! You heard the instructor!"
One large eyelid opened a bare slit to grant her a look of utter disdain. You go on ahead, Mine. I'm sure you need all the lessons you can get. Don't make a racket coming back, either. The eye closed again in a determined fashion and Galleph tried to tuck his head back down, but T'ryn had a solid support beneath it, and he found he couldn't force past her strength.
"Galleph..." she said warningly, an undertone of pure mischief coloring her physical and mental voice. "Lazy and fat, I see! You spent too much time lounging about in that egg!"
The hatchling stiffened, his orange-red eyes flying open to glare at her with affront. Her grin, half-fond, half-mocking, only made him less inclined to listen. He jerked his head from her grasp and determinedly buried it beneath a tightly clamped tail. I am going back to sleep, came the icy reply, immediately followed by patently false snoring noises. T'ryn only clucked her tongue in disappointment and stood, giving her back a quick stretch.
"If that's the way you want to do this, boyo..." In a moment she had straddled the large hatchling and reached down to dig her hands underneath his ribs, right behind his forelegs. Galleph's initial reaction was to curl more tightly into a ball, but T'ryn already had the grip she'd been seeking. With a bunching of muscles along arms and back, she straightened from her crouch, heaving the hatchling into the air, although he remained held firmly against her chest. Her right leg twinged warningly, but she had braced accordingly and it continued to support her without further complaint. Six feet of outraged simourv let out a startled squawk and his legs suddenly scrabbled for purchase. His bonded set him down carefully, and Galleph immediately whirled to stand glaring at her with wordless indignation. There was the faintest of spluttering sounds in the back of her head, which T'ryn took to mean that the hatchling was speechless for a change, and her grin widened until it threatened to crack her face. "Now then, my dearest Gally...you can walk with me to the courtyard like a big boy, or I can be carrying you like a helpless babe. It's up to you."
In truth, the redhead was quite certain she could not carry the 'little' simourv any such distance...but he looked too shocked at being manhandled to read her mind quite that deeply just yet. And she was quite serious - even if she couldn't carry him, she would find a way to drag his fluffy butt out there. Galleph couldn't help but read her determination, and had no doubt that she'd follow through on the threat. He growled at her, tail lashing his displeasure, but T'ryn only folded her arms and glared right back. The deadlock continued a few more moments, until the sounds of awakened Winglets filled the hall outside. Having had time to pull on clothes, they were now headed out. T'ryn dug deep and pulled out her trump card. "That blue Oshaph is going to beat you out there..." she pointed out with sugary sweetness.
The look Galleph bestowed on her could have frozen the heart of the sun. How stupid do you think I am? he grumbled, turning away from her with a dismissive flick of his tail and stalking over to the door. Well? he asked impatiently, Don't stand there all day. We're going to be late.
T'ryn wisely said nothing as she came up beside him and opened the door, but she did reach down to give his ears a fond skritch as they headed out, the young red leaning into it and grumbling wordlessly all the way to the courtyard.
They were not, alas, the first to arrive, but neither were they the last. T'ryn looked around but still didn't see K'ai - always a late riser, that one - nor Khealin. It was a wonder either of them had made it to any of the morning Candidate classes remotely on time. A'ria, for a wonder, was up and about, although Er'nei was still missing. The tall redhead frowned slightly. Was she going to have to go back in and get the girl? Galleph's imperious head-butt to her unprotected side was far from gentle, almost knocking the breath from her and she grabbed at the feathers along his back with a wince as the shock ran down her injured leg. Don't worry about her, Mine, they...oh! I'm sorry! the young red was instantly contrite, nosing at the bandage under her pants leg with concern. His ears flattened as he looked up at her with soulful eyes. Are you alright, Mine? I didn't...think... he trailed off, all traces of proud temper vanished at the thought that he had hurt His...again!
But T'ryn dropped to her good knee and wrapped her arms around the apologetic hatchling's neck, giving him a fierce hug. *I'm fine Gally, honestly. You just caught me by surprise. Let's just take it easy today, okay?*
Yes, Mine, came the unusually meek response, accompanied by a gentle nuzzling at her hair. The redhead smiled and set back, scruffing the feathers between his ears with a wink to show that all was forgiven.
"That's my boy," she said fondly, giving his nose a final pat. Before the conversation could proceed further, however, Fa'le began speaking. Galleph shifted to move under T'ryn's grip, taking her weight again as she carefully stood and began the walk towards the corral. So far everything made sense, and she already knew how to gut, skin, and clean meat from a carcass. T'ryn began whistling a low tune, confident that the morning would hold no further challenges for her. Galleph, still chastened from the results of his earlier roughhousing and realizing just how hungry he was, kept up the pace at her side, looking eagerly ahead for the promised meat-meal.
As they were released to their stations, Galleph immediately leapt towards the largest of the cows, although the sharp tone of his Bonded's voice brought him up short. "Wait, Gally! We still need a partner!" he turned to glower at the other chicks, and T'ryn stifled a groan as she 'heard' his under-impressed opinions of the lot.
Oshaph, of course, was right out of the question - but he was already partnered with the little rainbow, so that was alright. The redhead turned to A'ria next, but even as she opened her mouth the little drama-queen - Mo'tor? Mu'mu? The one who moped about in eyeliner all day - beat her to the punch. Looking a little vexed she looked for her buddy Rekima...and then remembered that he had not been bonded either. Her spirits feeling a bit dampened, T'ryn finally sighed and put out an open invitation. "We've got room over here for--"
Not too much room, Galleph broke in rudely, sending his thoughts to all and sundry. I'm hungry! You! he tossed his head commandingly at Mothiph and S'ra, You look small enough. You'll do.
Now it was T'ryn's turn to glare at her bonded in wordless outrage at his high-handed behavior. Galleph, of course, merely looked smug.

Blue Ekhaph was awake before Gealtachtaph's call went out. His, however, was most definitely not. The chick contented himself with curling up beside the bed, not wanting to try and get into the narrow bunk while his was sprawled face down, arms and legs akimbo, with his thoughts blurred and muzzed with sleep. Ekhaph spared a brief thought over how his bonded was breathing whilst face down in his pillow, but dismissed it quick enough. The redhead must be getting enough through the stuffing of the pillow, as he showed no signs of distress, his breaths rising slowly but smoothly.
Ekhaph stayed at the bedside, curled up into a downy blue ball with his tail twitched over his beak, waiting patiently for the Eyrie to awake. Of course, this process went a lot quicker once the call for the new winglets went out. The chick blinked open his eyes and slowly raised his head, checking on his bonded. The redhead was still sprawled on the bed, but his breathing was faster now, picking up as he fought to stay asleep. A quick probe along their link and Ekhaph exhaled a little simourv sigh; his was fighting valiantly to stay asleep. Minph and his were already stirring, and Ekhaph was finding it increasingly difficult to ignore the slowly building hunger in his empty stomach. He dipped his head at the rainbow's question and replied in his quiet, precise tones, K'lin/Mine is not quite awake yet. As soon as he is we will be joining you and the others, though, thank you.
He turned his attention back to his stubbornly slumbering bonded as Minph and his made their way out. K'lin/Mine. The redhead stirred at this, so Ekhaph repeated it a little louder, and at the same time tugged experimentally on their link, K'lin/Mine. This time he stirred more, and the movement was accompanied by a loud groan, " 'Kaph, don' wanna. 'm seepin' still, 'll get up laaaater." Ekhaph blinked at this and shook his head, We have been instructed to be at a lesson right now. We are already late. K'lin/Mine, Get Up. The chick punctuated his last two words by seizing a beakful of his bonded's blanket and giving a sharp tug, pulling it nearly completely away from the sleepy winglet.
K'lin curled into a tighter ball, trying to hug his pillow closer only to have Ekhaph tug at that as well. He had a brief, stubborn battle with the chick before relinquishing his hold on it and pouting at his as the blue staggered slightly from his pillow's sudden release. Good. Now, K'lin/Mine, stop making that face and get dressed! K'lin sighed and groaned but finally, at Ekhaph's stern glare and mental urging, hauled himself fully out of bed and started to dig through his clothing. Ekhaph poked his head into the drawer and nudged his beak at a plain brown tunic and leather breeches, both tough and durable, and both already stained. Those, K'lin/Mine.
Even with his persistence at getting his bonded up and dressed and ushering him out to the lesson, Ekhaph was still rather dismayed that they were the last winglet pair to arrive. He made a mental note to himself to start prodding his bonded awake earlier from now on. Still, despite Ekhaph's own displeasure, they managed to only miss the introduction of the lesson, and K'lin was at least trying his best to pay attention. Ekhaph was paying very close attention as well, noting all the points where his bonded seemed confused or unsure. With his assistance, K'lin would do fine, he was sure.
" 'Kaph, could you ask-" but his was already on it, broadcasting his thoughts politely to the other winglets, Would anyone like to partner with K'lin/Mine and I?

It was obvious from the way he jumped, A'ria hadn't expected the sullen new blue-rider to speak to him, let alone ask him to partner up. The boy blinked, wide-eyed at Mo'tu even as Charmaph turned her own attention to the pair; the tawny's gaze was blank, although A'ria could feel a sort of reserved curiousity in her. She didn't understand why Hers had startled, although she felt somewhat cautious because of it.
"Oh, um, me? Of-Of course!" A'ria managed a quick, nervous smile for the other boy, tentatively moving to stand nearer him. Charmaph followed, looking from Mo'tu to his blue, and back. The blue wasn't one of her siblings, but they had been on the sands together. Hello. Unlike A'ria's voice, the voice the the tawny projected to Mo'tu and Espeph betrayed no nervousness - rather, her voice was bland and unemotive, giving little hint to anything going on in her head.
The tawny settled herself beside A'ria's feet, finally turning her gaze away from the blue-pair. The neutrality left her eyes as they turned up to her rider. Why do we need partners, Mine? Her head tilted slightly to one side and she blinked slowly up at Hers.
A'ria's nervous gaze flicked down to the tawny, and he stammered when he spoke to her - uncomfortable speaking seemingly to himself infront of this stranger. "It-It's part of the lesson, Charm. We need to- We need to b-butcher this cow..." Why? "... so you can eat!" Oh. I am hungry, Mine.
A'ria wasn't sure if he should laugh or sigh - the noise that escaped him was a mix of both. He looked back at Mo'tu, offering another of those nervous smiles before gesturing toward the butchers and their cow-carcasses. "Um, shall we, then?"

K'ai was quite thoroughly unconscious when the simourv's mental voice rang through the barracks. Asleep on his back, over the course of the night he had let one hand fall from the low bed to rest lightly on Sobekeph's head. Now the two yawned in unison...but K'ai rolled over, pulling the pillow over his head while Sobekeph slowly stretched and sat up. The little black looked over at his bonded and blinked solemnly, giving him another moment or two before speaking. It is time to go mine.
There was a muttered response, mostly hidden by the pillow, but the hatchling plucked the gist of it from the young man's mind. The previous night's post-Hatching party had been quite a success! Talking, music, dancing...and the Simourv Dance K'ai had struggled so long and hard with making had finally come together even better than he had hoped. Even now the feathered cloak and mask lay draped carefully across the back of the room's single chair, where K'ai had deposited them before falling into slumber far too late last nigh--no, be honest, this morning! But having had only a couple hours of sleep - on top of the excitement and exertions of the party, on top of the adrenaline of the Hatching, on top of weeks of sleep-deprivation while he practiced his dance- the winglet was now completely exhausted.
Sobekeph considered this, then quietly went to the wardrobe, nosing it open to examine the clothes within. At length, he carefully pulled out a tan-colored tunic with only a little bit of red-and-yellow embroidery on it, and a matching pair of loose pants. Carrying them back to his bonded he deposited them at the foot of the bed, then returned to K'ai's side to nudge his shoulder. Perhaps you can rest later today, Mine. Now we must go.
K'ai turned over and cracked a bleary eye at his hatchling. "Right now, Sobekeph?"
The prince sat back on his haunches and fixed his bonded with a look of quiet dignity. I am hungry. His voice held no censure or strong emotion; he might very well have said 'it is Tuesday' for all the inflection he placed on the words. But it was enough to send K'ai bolt upright, throwing the covers off and rolling into motion with a slight groan for his sore muscles.
"Sorry, sorry," he muttered through the cloth as he scrubbed at his face and checked his hair in the small mirror. "Do we need to stop at the kitchens before we head out or...?"
Sobekeph shook his little head, rising to his feet once more and taking his place by the door. I believe that is what we are going to be doing in the lesson. Your clothes are on the bed.
K'ai nodded his thanks and changed without further conversation. The tunic was fairly subdued by his usual standards, and should hold up for whatever the instructor had planned. As a final thought, he grabbed a scrap of gold silk to bind his braids back with, so he wasn't heading out completely unadorned. Stiff though he was, it was clear that Sobekeph was his first priority, and he decided that he could stretch as they walked.
Although the courtyard was mostly full of winglets when they arrived, both were gratified to see that they weren't the last ones to appear. Out of habit, K'ai glanced around for his former roommate. Not seeing him, he hesitated, but Sobekeph only yawned and leaned reassuringly against his bonded. Ekhaph will bring His along shortly, do not worry. The dark-skinned man smiled down at his black and obligingly worked his fingers into the itch behind the hatchling's ear as they waited for the lesson to begin.
K'ai was far too well-trained to groan out loud when he heard what was in store for the day. Nonetheless, he couldn't quite muster a look of enthusiasm for the coming task either. His expression stoic and determined, he grimly marched forward, Sobekeph at his side as they made their way to the corral. The black glanced at him out of the side of his eyes, his mind-voice soft. What is wrong, Mine?
K'ai shook his head and patted the little black-and-white head reassuringly. *Nothing to worry about,* he told the hatching. Which was his way of saying that he didn't know how to explain how he felt to his partner just yet. It wasn't just that the process was inevitably going to make a mess - and not just of his clothes! - because the journeyman Healer had no problems with blood or gore. But he was devoted to saving life, not...not butchering what remained when life was extinguished. Even if it was just a cow, K'ai had no liking for having a dead anything rubbed in his face. And he knew he was going to be at a disadvantage compared to some of the rowdier winglets. Sobekeph, sensing his friend's unease, trilled softly and pressed his comforting warmth against the young man's side as they stopped to examine the stations. "Well, Sobekeph? Which one do you want?" K'ai asked, the corner of his mouth quirking upwards in the shadow of a wry smile. It really didn't matter to him, but perhaps the little prince had a preference...?
The black hatchling blinked at his partner, sending him an empathic wave of support before eying the morning offerings. He considered each one in turn, looking not just at size, but also what could be seen of the tone and health of the animals. Others were already moving towards the cows with varying levels of excitement and enthusiasm, and Ka'i glanced down at Sobekeph, concerned that if he took much longer to decide, they'd be stuck with the dregs. Still, the princeling would not be rushed. He stood and stretched leisurely, then began to walk down the line, examining each carcass in more detail. When he passed Oshaph and Minph he offered both of them a regal nod of greeting and politely moved on past their cow without pausing. Charmaph and Espeph received similar pleasantries.
When he reached Galleph, the black paused, looking the brash red over silently, a hint of reproof in the tilt of his head. Galleph's bristled response drew only a mild blink of admonishment from the black, who kept moving before words or blows could be exchanged. At length he drew up beside one of the cows that was not as large as some of the others, but was nevertheless young and plump-looking. Sobekeph sat down beside it, and K'ai strode over to join him with that wry little smile still in place. "This is it? You're sure?"
Yes, the black replied with simple dignity, and K'ai nodded his approval.
"Would you mind if K'lin and Ekhaph joined us?"
After a few moments of consideration while he examined the blue in question, Sobekeph nodded his acquiescence. Ekhaph will make a good squadmate in my wing someday. The statement was, as usual, made with no great fanfare but with a quiet, supreme confidence that his words would come to pass. K'ai took a moment to study his hatchling appraisingly, then smiled.
"So be it." He raised his voice to be heard over by the main group, raising his hand to get their attention. "K'lin, Sobekeph would like to invite Ekhaph to join us. What do you say?"

Mo'tu nodded as the boy with the Tawny- what was his name again? A'ria or something, accepted his offer, albeit sounding a little nervous. The Tawny by his feet showed less nervousness, greeting the two cheerfully. Espeph nodded politely to the Tawny he had seen on the day of his hatching, but stayed by Mo'tu, weaving in around his legs. Mo'tu blinked, then looked down in delight. It had been the closest the blue had been to him since the Bonding. He smiled before he knew what he was doing, then quickly caught the Tawny rider's eye and immediatly replaced the smile with a scowl, blushing at himself for being so obvious.
"Well. Let's get on then. Espeph is hungry. that Tawny looks hungry too, not that I would admit it!. Espeph gave His a glance of amusement, projecting to the other simourv Let's get our Mines to start butchering, then we can share the food, okay?. Mo'tu, hearing that, gave his simourv a flash of annoyance. No one- especially not some random Tawny- was as important as Espeph or as deserving as food. He would consent to the two sharing food, of course, but if there wasn't enough, Mo'tu would make sure no one would let his Blue starve.
He strode ahead, Espeph quick on his heels, to the nearest butcher and cow. The butcher was a tall burly man with a bloodstained apron and a wash of brown curls that hung sweatily on his forehead. The man immediately began explaining how to quickly kill and guy the cow, and Mo'tu fought against a wave of revulsion. If Espeph hadn't been feeling so hungry, he probably would have turned around and left right then to enjoy a -normal- breakfast of his own. As it was, he couldn't quite bring himself to look as the man slit the cow across the throat, then handing a knife each to the two boys for them to give it a try.
For a few minutes, Mo'tu stood still, unable to quite bring himself to get near the bleeding animal. A light nudge form Espeph (One that almost sent him sprawling into the cow!) roused him from his stupor, he hesitantly stepped up to the cow. Flinching lightly, he raised the knife up, slowly pressing the tip into the skin, past the fur. Espeph, what was the first step again?. You need to skin it, Mine. Cut along the stomach and peel the skin off, like the butcher told you Mo'tu tried not to gag as he presses the knife a little farther in, looking towards the tawnyrider. "You can join in any day now.
(Shrimpy post, sorry :3 The next one will be better)

M'laey smiled at Al'eria and Minph as they approached her and Oshaph. "Yes, we did actually, but only very briefly. I'm M'laey and this is Oshaph. Man, all of this stuff looks really messy", she said, looking at the cows, knifes and white pasty stuff. She was sure Oshaph would be covered in everything by the time the lesson was finished. The blue chick bounded over to the smaller rainbow. Oh! he chirped, Your feathers are much shinier and prettier than I remember Minph! Would you like to play catch? M'laey turned to her hatchling, "No no Osh, we have to get you two fed before you run off and play. You don't want to get dizzy with hunger now do you?" The young blue tilted his head to side and acquiesced.
He let his gaze wander as more chicks and their riders arrived. Then he spotted Galleph loping in and his ears immediately flattened back. He flicked his tail as his feathers raised on point, making him look slightly larger than he was. M'laey, who had been eyeing up a cow with Al'eria, felt what her simourv was doing and immediately. She crouched down beside him, laying a hand on his soft feathery head. It's alright Oshaph, he's found His now, he won't hurt us or anyone else. You don't need another scar love, she whispered through their link. Oshaph lowered his head, his bright orange wings tucked in tight at his sides. Sorry M'laeyMine.. Our hatching was just.. frightening. I don't want him anywhere near us.
Looking over at the red pair M'laey saw that they were busy choosing a partner together and weren't interested in her or her simourv. Truth be told she had no argument with Galleph's rider T'ryn at all. She hadn't had a chance to speak to the girl at all since the hatching because of how their partners felt about eachother, but she knew she admired her for standing up to the red chick in the first place. Maybe they could get together and talk one of these days? She'd have to keep it secret from Oshaph though, he might get upset about it... But surely tension between chicks was a bad thing. It needed to be sorted one way or another.
Refocusing her mind on the task at hand, M'laey guided her blue back over to the meat and began slicing up the cow, complete with distasteful looks and occasional "ews".
